Dorm Room Essesntials From Ace Hardware

Any young person going off to college has a long list of items that are needed to survive in a college dorm for the next nine months.  Everyone knows that they need sheets and towels, but here is a list of some items that you may not think of, but are just as useful:

  1. 3M Command hooks - Since most dorms do not permit putting nails in the walls to hang items, these nifty little hooks do a great job of holding all kinds of things and they come off cleanly so no dorm fines at the end of the year.  The hooks come in a variety of sizes and shapes for all your needs:  hanging clothes, organizing cords, hanging pictures, organizing & hanging jewelry, hanging towels, hat hooks, etc.
  2. Power strips, extension cords & surge protectors - Many dorms rooms were built long before the electronics age so there are few outlets for all the computers, printers, chargers, lights, etc. that the average college student now carries with them.  Power strips & extension cords are a must to keep all electronics up and running and surge protectors will keep those electronics safe from any power outages.
  3. Flashlight & batteries - Speaking of power outages - be prepared with a flashlight and batteries.  Whether you have to find your way out of a darkened building or just want to go to the bathroom in the middle of the night, a flashlight comes in handy.
  4. Basic Tool Kit - A kit with a hammer, tape measure, screwdrivers (flathead and phillips), and pliers comes in handy.  You may need to assemble furniture or make a small repair.  Having a few tools for simple jobs are always useful.
  5. Storage Containers - Most dorm rooms have some storage, but it usually is not enough and is just a big cabinet that is hard to keep organized.  Under bed containers and storage containers in a variety of sizes (with lids) will keep things neat and organized.  Ziploc Jumbo Size bags are also great to use for storage especially in spaces where a rigid container won’t work.
  6. Dry Eraser Board - When hung on the outside of your dorm room door this is the old school way of leaving messages for each other.
  7. Step Stool - Great for getting up into those storage areas above your closet.  A folding stool can be stored under the bed or next to the clothes dresser.
  8. Electric Fan - A small electric fan helps cool off a warm dorm room when the A/C is not doing the job and it also cools off a warm room when the heating works too well.
  9. Cordless HandiVac - A rechargeable handivac is great for cleaning up spills like popcorn or potato chip crumbs.
  10. Disinfecting Wipes & Hand Sanitizer - With so many people in close quarters, college dorms are a breeding ground for communicable diseases.  Especially during flu season have some disinfecting wipes and hand sanitizer available and use them frequently.

Your local Ace Hardware store carries all these and many more useful dorm room items.
